Greetings,

For the half-dozen or so that may have wondered, an unexpected field assignment (spurred by a cowardly attack by WCL forces) kept me absent from 21-28 July,
causing me to miss last weeks mailing. My most profuse apologies...

Thanks to Flying Goat (any relation to the Flying Fish) in the GABB Saturday
morning, I found out that a nice scan of the original, black and white
Michael Wm. Kaluta art used for the comic book cover in TABB is available at:

http://pc93.chm.bris.ac.uk/~kate/kal2.jpg

Ill probably make it available on the World Watch site eventually.

More (too much, Im sure some would say) on the whole gun issue. Ive dusted
off my editors cap and made the occasional snip where the comments digressed
too far away from the topic at hand (namely BB). Apologies to those I did that
too, as I generally try and leave posts untouched, or at least get ahold of the
authors first. Being a week behind on everything made that tricky. Unless
something really profound or unusual comes up, I wouldnt expect to see any
more posts on the use of guns any time soon.

Not only was Pepe Sernas birthday last week, but I learned he also
has a career as an artist. He has a website at:

http://www.pepeserna.com

I urge you all to take a peek.

Richter issued a new statement concerning progress on the FOX thing.
A short version is on the World Watch site; more detailed one on the
official site:

As a longtime fan of the great Buckaroo Banzai, I can't believe I've
survived this long without joining up!

Lessee, I'm 37. I have BA's in History and English and an MA in English
with an emphasis on Popular Culture and Literary Theory. I'm working on
the greatest "Masked Mexican Wrestler vs. Nazi Were-Hyena" novel ever
written. In English. (I've actually got one publisher--Baen Books--that
has requested the full manuscript after reviewing the sample chapters
and outline query I sent them!) I'm into anything esoteric, from Santo &
Blue Demon films to Hong Kong Hopping Vampires and Turkish super-hero
films. If it's weird, I'm there! I have a Tiki addiction that defies
rational explanation. I have three EX-fiances and since renounced all
interest and/or belief in such relationships. I am a practicing
neo-pagan and general eccentric. harmless, of course.

My favorite Banzai memory was at an '80's SF con (either Disclave,
Marcon or Inconjunction, damned if I can remember which.... maybe even
an early Millenicon?) where several of us fans set up a Blue Blaze
Irregular themed room party. For the start-up, we did an in-character
"walk-through" based on the closing credits of the film. Each of us
designed a costume/persona, either borrowed from the film, or
preferably, an original persona in the spirit of the BBI's. We had the
closing credit music on tape and played it from a boom box while several
party-goers started the walk-through. Others of us joined in as the line
wound through the Con, along with curious onlookers who just jumped in
to find out what was going on. The walk-through ended at the party with
the movie playing on VCR and various drinks/entertainments. (I vaguely
remember a "spit the rubber octopus/spider" target game and bubble-punch
goggles being handed out. GREAT party!) We duplicated the
walk-through/party concept at several other Cons, but as the movie faded
from recent fan memory, turn-out reduced and the concept was lost. Alas.

Salutations-

Since I haven't seen (what is evidently) the fan fiction published elsewhere
that started this discussion, and since I have NO intention to continue the
"talk radio" style debate on gun control, let me just make two observations.

1) There always have been, and always will be, a subset of fans that
gravitates toward the paramilitary. Whether it's a "Logan's Run" Sandman, an
"Alien's" Marine, a Trooper (Storm or Starship), a Road Warrior, or a Blue
Blaze Irregular with an Uzi. That's what they like about this game of
"pretend" that we call fandom. It's their corner of the shared Banzai
universe. No problem.

2) The most telling reference to personal weapons in the film (and please
remember, the film and its offspring is all we're talking about) is when the
gang is gearing up for the raid on Yoyodyne. Perfect Tommy is startled that
Buckaroo is going to get "his guns." (Even in this highly charged,
planet-at-risk situation.) It is evidently so rare that he uses them, that he
is slamming dresser drawers to even FIND the things!

Food for thought.

Sharkey

**** Actually, the guns he found, it was the ammo Mrs. Johnson had moved.
BTW - she was carrying when she answered the door. I imagine the Institute
was on some sort of alert status. I doubt she carried all the time. - ArcLight ****

BBI Miss Rachel here - I agreed with many of BBI Czaplicki's points on
knowing your weapons and when to use your brain.

Meanwhile, on roping... this is a reference to the cowboy skills that interns
must learn in order to become residents of the Institute. In such example,
many BBI's might also be interested in learning roping in order to have
similar cowboy skills to share and discuss. Also, there is a difference
between ranching and camping survival and armed conflict survival.

Most sincerely,

In regards to the ''discussion'' of last newsletter concerning ''paramilitary
ops'' in the BB universe............
Consider this- BB takes place in a ''fictional'' world where ''good vs.
evil".........
When one tries to equate what happens in ''our'' world vs. ''BB universe", I
can see where there can be concern and confusion over what is paramilitary
and is it appropriate.
When BB can contact the President it can be taken for fact that BB and his
''team'' are pretty high up on the food chain of national defense. That and
the fact that BB is a mix of James Bond, John Wayne, Albert Einstein, Young
Einstein, and any one else who represents good against evil.....well, that
also can be taken for fact that weaponry in the BB universe used by the team
would be appropriate for the situation and used appropriately.
Which in a way means that I agree with PCz and his comments.......this is
good clean imaginative classic fun.......don't analyzes it....just sit back
and enjoy the waves.......

I have no problem with Buckaroo and the Hong Kong Cavaliers having access to
such weapons such as you mentioned. However, I don't think *all* the BBI's
would have access to such weapons, or even most of them. In my opinion, such
things would be restricted to the aforementioned "strike teams".

I think we share a difference of opinion about who comprises the Blue Blaze
Irregulars. I viewed it as sort of combination Buckaroo Banzai fan
club/self-improvement society that tries to live up to the "Be all that you
can be" so often used in the ads for the US army. A lot of people who were in
the BBI's would probably be looking forward to being an intern at the Banzai
Institute when they got old enough if they had the inclination to be
scientists. I also got the impression that just about anyone could apply to
be a BBI and those with a more martial bent would naturally gravitate towards
the strike teams.

While it was funny and interesting that Scooter Lindley had access to (and
knew how to use) such weapons in the film, I don't seriously think he was
meant to be a "typical" young BBI, or even a typical BBI period.

>As for the fans take on this issue, I believe some of the paramilitary

I admit it's been a fair number of years since I read the book (my copy is
currently stored in the attic along with most of my admittedly huge
collection of books), but I don't remember where this is explicitly stated.
Could you refresh my memory?

Apologies to those of you who may have read this already at the
newsgroup alt.fan.buckaroo-banzai, but I'm crunched for time this AM
(7/21/99).

And before I forget, happy b-day to Reno from us too; we promise not
to have you serenaded by the usual suspects.

-----------
BBI Replay here. Despite Dragon's comments about the series not even
being at the stage of filming yet, there's been some happenings here
in the St. Louis metro that should be passed along. Mind you, it's
still only rumor, but if it turns out to be more than that, you heard
it here first.

Strike Team Renegade has been known to meet at a local business called
the Wizard's Wagon (wizardswagon@planetstl.com, if you're so
inclined). Sam, the owner, brought my attention to an encounter he had
recently with a gentleman looking to buy Banzai memorabilia. They got
to discussing the subject and Sam allowed as how he was connected to a
local fan group (us, natch), whereupon the gent he was talking to said
"Oh, they like me around here, do they?" This caused Sam a bit of
confusion at first, and may (or not) indicate the customer himself was
the new Buckaroo.

This customer of his then claimed to be part of the cast of the Fox
series, and named other names, none of which Sam recognized, of the
new cast. He also said that Peter Weller and Jeff Goldblum have a
cameo in the first episode, and that they are in fact filming; there
will be 6 episodes ready for the January mid-season replacements. The
subject of future promo appearances in the area was also mentioned;
however, no details on this at present.

More than this, I don't know. E-mail Sam at the addy above if you
think you can get more out of him; he's notoriously bad with names,
though, so don't expect much on that account.

Updates if and as they occur.

As a person with a general science education, and following-up upon the
explanation behind the watermelon in the press (to air lift food to third
world countries where you couldn't drive in): As the institute keeps in mind
the plight of all our brothers and sisters in the world *and* food need not
be airdropped but rather air lifted in today's world *and* the potato is both
a good food source (carbohydrates and some minerals in the skins) *and* can
be used as a kind of battery (power sort), I postulate....

The "Fries" is probably a riff on giant potatoes being genetically engineered
to act as either a source for household power generators or food, possibly
both. While it may still be less expensive to drop food from an airplane than
to actually stop, packing can be used for firewood and/or to build shelters
and parachutes material can be used for shelter or clothing... how it will
fit into the action adventure part of the plot is yet to be seen.... I could
come up with several scenarios, but I wouldn't want to ruin the show if I
came up with one close to the "actual" truth.

Another interesting thing to note, since the Hong Kong Cavaliers is a "cover
band" for the most part, eclectic as it may be, perhaps they will do a cover
of "Weird Al's" Addicted to Spuds. Certainly if Al could be reached from his
busy touring schedule, he might even want to do a cameo.

Sincerely,
BBI Miss Rachel

I've been lurking about and I felt it's time to introduce myself. Of course
some of the delay is because I read my mail on a PalmPilot on the train and
long notes take a bit of effort (all that bouncing around makes writing
difficult).

Saw BB way back in the theatres when it was released originally. Never saw
it since in it's original wide format <sigh>. I loved it and told all my
friends, but it got pulled before most could see it. Still those that saw
it liked it and it was fun quoting lines and such (Lizardo's accent is
almost as much fun as cussing a la "Johnny Dangerously"). Managed to buy
the videotape though and watch the tape every now and then and that has
helped keep the fire lit, but I've lost contact with those old BB friends
(still my brother though he's long distance now). Followed BB info on GEnie
but it dried up (Gypsy Rose, you here?)

Tragedy/regret: ordered two copies of the book back then. One arrived, the
other still was on backorder. !! I gave the book to my friend and said I'll
wait for the next copy !! As you may have figured, it never came.

Lately, this book has been on my mind and I began searching for a text copy
on the Internet hoping some dedicated fan typed up the book (okay, it's
illegal, but the book is out of print and I will not pay US$30-95 for the
book as I've seen asked or sold for at auction and book sites).

I did get two copies of the script (3rd draft and film transcript) and have
them loaded on my Palm...and found these lists.

Now my timing seems to be good with all this positive talk of a series.
Hopefully they'll air it in my area! And my brother actually found the BB
novel (for $2, thank you very much). He says he'll lend it to me next time
he visits (stress LEND). I've waited 15 years to read the novel, what's
another one or two, right?
And there's talk of a DVD. Hmm. Now that would be the clincher reason to
buy a player! It's enough to see the film would it be pushing our luck to
hope for widescreen, remastered and all the extras (like the parent's scene)?

BTW Anyone have the Ernest Cline story I've read about? Or at least more
details as to why I can't download it anywhere. I read that when the movie
fell through permission was given to re-post the story but then it's pulled
and no reason but "legal" given ("By who? Who by?")

Anyway hope to make it to the chat, but fear the spam. Is this a legit
fear? Train ride's done time to sign out.

Hello all from a end-of-vacationing BBI!

BB Chats-
The BB chat room's went well last week. Granted we only have had a small
turnout of fans/BBIs show up, on average 5-7, but the chats are lively

and fun.
We are inviting you all to join us next week at one of the regularly
scheduled Buckaroo Banzai chats.

They will be at: http://home.talkcity.com/

Wednesday, August 4th, evening 7 PM PST/10 PM EST
and,
Saturday, August 7th, morning 8 AM PST/11 AM EST

Once you get to the above site the instructions are:
Click on "chat" on the black strip near the top of the front page.
Then go to "If you already know the room you want to chat in? Enter
here:", type in "BUCKAROO BANZAI" (all caps) and click on "Go!"
From there you'll have to type in a user name in the "not a member yet"
area.
This site won't like "BBI(space) your name" as a user name. So I suggest
that you use a "-" between "BBI" and your name (like "BBI-Dragon") or
just use your name alone. We have discovered that some servers do not
like the "-" between "BBI" & "name". You'll just have to find out what
works for you.
Then click on "chat".

Chats will last for around two hours.
Crazy Horse and Dragon are looking forward to seeing you there!

If you are on the OneList for BB you will also get an e-mail reminder of
these chat room events. To sign up for this go to :
http://www.onelist.com
Not only will you get the BB chat reminders but you will be in an elite
group of fans/BBIs who communicate regularly via e-mail. Give it a try,
lurk or post, it's fun either way, believe it!

The two GABBs/chats we did this last week went well, Wednesday evenings
around 4 of us chatted for just less then 2 hours. Saturday's chat was
the best yet, with 5 of us at a time and a few of the "old guard" there
too. This one went 3 hours, believe it!
Concerns have been expressed by a few on the issue of receiving spam
from the chat rooms. Personally I can't tell if I am or not. I don't
give my e-mail address at this site even to set up the chat rooms. If
you have concerns use a "toss away" address just for the BB GABBs. I
don't find it necessary myself.

For the "Long Form" of W.D. Richter's statement go to:
http://www.banzai-institute.com/

Novel contest-
I will be accepting two forms of entries for the novel.
#1 will be the "could have been" a BB quote or saying.
#2 will be a Banzai haiku.

Either must be submitted to this newsletter between now and the 99th
issue.
Only one entry per BBI/fan please. That's one Banzai haiku or one BB
quote or saying.
I will choose one, either a haiku or a saying for receiving the novel.
I do ask however, if you already have the novel that you put your entry
in
as "noncompetitive" so that the novel is given to someone who doesn't
already have a copy.
The BB saying does not have to be original. It can be from another
source.
The Banzai haiku, is a short verse of three lines, first of 5 syllables,
second of 7 syllables and the third of 5 again. This is the basic guide
line and can be expanded upon by the adventurous.

Here is a noncompetitive entry from me, Dragon. It's a Haiku I came up
with in about ten minutes to show you how easy they are to do.

On the 100th issue of this newsletter I will announce the winner! I can
dig up something from my collection for a few "Honorable mentions" as
well.

Thanks-
A special thank you goes out to Miss Rachel and Lady Rhain for helping
to make this newsletter a little more lively.

Who is Evil?-
Here is something to toss out. The Nova Police, the black lectroids, who
call them selves "freedom loving forces" were willing to cause the
vaporization of our whole damn planet to stop Lord Worfin. What kind of
ethics are they acting on here?
Lord Worfin and his red lectroids, at their worst, committed murders and
robberies to reach their goals. Okay, and there was the shock tower and
the honey and ants, so toss in torture too.
The Nova Police, on the other hand, were willing to kill everything on
our planet to achieve their goal. It makes me wonder if they've done
this or something like it before.

Who was really displaying the worse Evil?

Random novel quote: This is part of the dialogue during the yellow

John Emdall, "The Soviets will retaliate, your President will launch a
massive counter-strike, and within twenty minutes the danger to us will
be removed."
"Like a tumor," said B. Banzai.
"Quite," she said.
"Only you kill the patient," B. Banzai rightly pointed out.
"You have my general regret for the trouble this will cause the human
race," she said, "but one cannot deal decorously with Lectroids. They
are detestable, really; we should never have bred them."

<Not so quick recap. Highschool student Azrael Praetor stopped a kidnapping
attempt on fellow student Evlyn Sade. After a second attempt succeeded,
Azrael was approached by a delivery man who presented him with a package
containing an idol. When Azrael twisted the Idol's head, a demon emerged.
Azrael made a deal with the demon which was, in fact, the same one which
inhabited the body of Kent Allard, A.K.A. Lamont Cranston, A.K.A. The Shadow.
Azrael allowed the demon to share his body in exchange for being made the new
Shadow. After rescuing Evlyn from her abductors, she told him about the
history of the demon, a history which she was, in fact, a major part of
herself. Evlyn is, in fact, the last descendant of the original shadow and
the rightful ruler of the mystical city of Shamballa. The city had been
taken over by the enemy of the former Shadow, Shiwain Kahn, last descendant
of Ghengis Kahn, shortly after Kent Allard's death. Allard was killed when
the Marpa Tulku, religious leader of Shamballa, attempted to unbind the demon
from him. Evlyn told Azrael that the only way to end his deal with the demon
would be to regain Shamballa and get the Marpa Tulku to help once again. Few
citizens of Shamballa escaped, however and even fewer knew how to get back.
Enter Buckaroo Banzai. His father, thought to have been born in Japan, was
actually one of the escapees from Shamballa. Evlyn and Azrael made the trip
to the Banzai institute in hopes that Buckaroo knew the location of
Shamballa. He did not know, but did know who would. Kwai Chaing Caine.
Meanwhile, Tommy and several Blue Blazers were tracking the crime lord known
as The Green Hornet. The Hornet, who is secretly Paul Reid, agreed to meet
Buckaroo on the Washington Street Bridge. After refusing to allow Buckaroo
to clear him of all criminal charges, the Hornet later agreed to aid the
Shadow in his attack on Shamballa. The group was then attacked by none other
than the remainder of the WCL, who are apparently still somehow serving Hanoi
Xan !
even after his death. Azrael, Evlyn, and Buckaroo then left for San
Francisco, the last place Buckaroo had seen Caine, and embarked on a week
long trek across the country, tracking Caine and ending up in Toronto's
Chinatown. Got all that? Good. And now...>

Part Three
Chapter Two

Evlyn pulled her jacket in tight around her as a cold wind came from out of
the west. She began moving towards the jetcar as the wind picked up more and
more speed and became ever more forceful.

"Dr. Banzai what's happening?" Evlyn shouted over the wind.

"I don't know, I've never seen anything like this. Hurry, get in the car."

Evlyn and Buckaroo ran, or rather, tried to run towards the car but the wind
suddenly changed direction, holding them back, away from the car. Meanwhile
the jet car began to rock back and forth harder and harder until it was up on
only its two left wheels, about to tip over.

"ENOUGH!" Caine emerged from the building. Instantly, the winds died down
and the car fell back on all four wheels. "SHOW YOURSELF FIEND!"

Bon Bon Hi stepped out of the shadows.

"So, I finally managed to get your attention eh Caine?"

"Leave them alone, it is I you have come for."

"I come for all of you, for soon you shall all bow down on your knees before
the Sing Wah."

Azrael drew his guns, but before he could fire, Hi raised his hand and the
guns flew to the ground, away from Azrael.

"Yours is a lesser demon compared to that which I serve boy."

	"STOP THIS!" Caine ordered

"Stop me Caine, go ahead, I can not be defeated by the likes of you."

	"Stop this."

	WHACK

	FZZZZZT...

Bon Bon Hi fell to the street revealing a young man in white face paint and
dressed all in black standing behind him holstering two nightsticks.

	"What the hell was that?"

"That, was one hundred and sixty thousand volts of electricity being shot
thought a nightstick as it made contact with a human skull."

"And you are..."

"Infinity," Buckaroo said walking over to the young man and shaking his hand,
"the first of the few gothic Blue Blaze Irregulars. So, where are the rest
of the Nacht Kinder?"

"Back home, I'm here on vacation, and it's a good thing too."

"Yes, very fortunate," Bon Bon Hi said as he got up form the ground, "But
never the less, futile I'm afraid." Bon Bon Hi turned to face Caine.
"Another time perhaps." He turned back to Infinity. "And as for you, boy,"
He said raising both his hands high and bringing them down with a clap like
thunder. Instantly, the heavens opened up and lightning shot from the sky
hitting Infinity. "That is what real power feels like." The ground opened up
and swallowed Bon Bon Hi leaving only his echoing laughter. Caine ran to the
Blazer.

"Do not attempt to move."

"Wh-who are you?"

"I am Caine, I will help you."
