Greetings,

Well, what could I say that could top the news of
11 December? Well...I could say that not only has
the script been approved, bought and rushed into
production with a guaranteed 5 year run, but I'd
be lying. Sorry.

Rest assured, when I do hear anything new, you
good folks will be the first to know.

For the new members, our first entry today is a rerun
of the 11 December OFFICIAL press release from
W.D. Richter.

Enjoy,

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FROM: W.D. Richter
TO: Loyal Buckaroo fans everywhere
SUBJECT: Buckaroo Banzai pilot script
DATE: December 11, 1998

What a pleasure it is to make this announcement: Earl Mac Rauch has just
completed the hour-long pilot episode script for our proposed Fox Network /
PolyGram Entertainment television series, "BUCKAROO BANZAI - ANCIENT SECRETS
& NEW MYSTERIES."

The script will be submitted to the Fox Network on Tuesday, December 15, 1998
and, if well-received, will be the basis for an exciting weekly exploration
of Dr. Banzai, his extraordinary accomplishments, and the equally
extraordinary people who volunteer their time at the Banzai Institute.

Hopes run high at the Institute. A courageous gentleman at PolyGram named
Steve Gelber (a die-hard fan) has championed our cause and has found an
equally adventuresome ally in Rob Dwek of the Fox Network. Rob commissioned
the pilot script only a month ago, and Mac Rauch has been writing away
furiously, night and day, since then.

Perhaps one of the most exciting recent developments has been the arrival at
the Fox Network of Doug Herzog as new president of its entertainment
division...and, as such, its chief television programmer. Mr. Herzog comes to
Fox from Comedy Central (and before that MTV) where he drew praise for his
bold, innovative, and radical programming...a strategy hes vowed to implement
at Fox as well. I was particularly encouraged by Mr. Herzogs remarks to the
media when his appointment was announced: "I think youve got to look at
different ways of being funny. Im going to take chances and take risks.
Ive always seen Fox as a maverick brand, a renegade brand."

Ive always seen Buckaroo Banzai and the Hong Kong Cavaliers as a maverick
band, a renegade band...and they certainly have different ways to be funny...and
they sure as hell take chances and risks. Wait until the pilot if you doubt
me on that. Buckaroo finally locks horns with The Scourge of Burma, The
Spawn of Hell, The Face That Is No Face...the unspeakably horrid Boss of The
World Crime League and Supreme Commander of the Legion of Death, the one, the
only...HANOI XAN! Its not a pretty sight.

And look to Simon & Schuster in the not-too-distant future (their Pocket
Books division) for a new series of Buckaroo novels that Mac Rauch will be
adapting from the secret journals of that hard rockin Hong Kong Cavalier,
Mister Reno Nevada. In fact feel free to contact Simon & Schuster to reserve
your copy now! And thank you for all the years and years of wonderful
support. We owe you one.

From:	jetlightfoot@juno.com (Becky M Nelson)

Greetings of the season to all.

As you will know if you read the last issue, the question of BBI numbers
and how/whether they are recorded anywhere came up. We've also been
queried on the subject at the web site recently.

For the record, there are a few numbers currently recorded on the
Reserved Names List. The ones we have on file follow the name they belong
with in parentheses, but we probably have less than a dozen all told.

If people would like to submit their numbers, we'll happily put them up;
however, it could take awhile to get them all onto the site. Therefore,
I'd appreciate it if you'd follow the following suggestions:

1. If you're already submitting to the newsletter on a fairly regular
basis but have not corresponded with us directly, please add your number
to either your sig file or your next newsletter post; we'll extract it.
Hopefully, this will provide us with several numbers in a single place.

2. If you've e-mailed us more than once, a post containing only your
number is acceptible, as we can match up the e-dress to your original
name submission.

3. All other submissions of BBI numbers should include your BBI name as
well as the number you're submitting.

In any event, numbers will be recorded on a first-come first-serve basis.
If someone submits a number that isn't on the Reserved Names List yet but
which we have in our update notes, we'll e-mail you and let you know you
need to try again. I can't promise that we'll be able to keep the delay
between submission and list updates reasonable at this time of year, but
we'll try. Profuse apologies in advance for any failure to do so; we're
working on several projects at present.

Lastly, you may be interested in knowing that we are currently preparing
to launch a mirror of the Strike Team site. Further details on this will
be forthcoming, but the long and short of why is the FortuneCity File
Manager doesn't like some of our longer files and makes updating them
difficult on us. Don't be surprised if the Reserved Names List fragments
further due to this; as of last weekend, it's in 6 sections.

From:	deas@u-c-s.com (Jason Deas)

My dear fellow BBIs,

According to Lord Karlo, one of my inner circle, a new release of The
Movie is currently available for rental at the downtown Tower Video store
in New Orleans. Sale copies should be on their way this week or so.

Also according to Karlo, this release seems to be a "new" version. Could
it be that the bootleg workprint has been cleaned up for official
release? I believe this to be the case.

However, before you, I, and others start storming the video stores
without proper information, can ArcLight or one of you others confirm the
above information?

Hi all,

I'm generally a lurker here, having signed on a few months ago. I
originally joined because I have a copy of BUCKAROO BANZAI on
beta. (My parents used to have beta when I was a kid, so I somehow
ended up with copies of BB and Repo Man of all things.) Anyway, I
would be happy to give this video a new home, assuming somebody
wanted to buy it off me. Please send offers to: reality@interzone.wustl.edu.

Be warned: it is NOT in mint condition. It played fine the last time
I watched it (about 10 years ago), and the slip-case has some wear-
n-tear. I can scan the front and back to let you see what kind of
shape it's in, if you're interested.

Actually, you need <lots> of stuff yet. Besides that material (I don't have
the CD, but I do have a tape of the Boddicker tracks), I have a very
large lobby poster (looks to be about 4' by 6'), the laser disk, an
almost-life-sized standup of Buckaroo (lobby exhibit), headbands, lapel pins,
bumper stickers, Yoyodyne and Banzai Institute mugs, the promotional
materials
given out by the studio for the release, the little "jet car through the
mountain" spring-loaded toy, half a dozen lobby cards, and both versions of
the comic (the one-part and two-part versions), one of which is autographed
to me by Peter Weller.

Keep at it!

I keep seeing copies of the BB "soundtrack" CD being offered on ebay, and
read desperate notes from people looking for them. While we all (should) know
that there was _never_ an official soundtrack CD (or even a bootlegged copy
of a promotional release), can anyone who bought one of these expensive
little buggers confirm that there is anything on any of them that could not
have come directly from a laser disc (or other commercial release?). Music
without dialog, dialog without music, new music or dialog
...anything?

**** I'll let someone else offer a full critque/comparison, but I'll
point out that local s-f cons (if you have access to them) and
sometimes websites offer these things for sale and something less
than they go for on Ebay. Take some time, hunt around. Yes, I'm
getting an anti-auction site bias. Is it that obvious? - ArcLight ****

Subj: A few casting thoughts
Date:	12/12/98 3:01:29 AM Eastern Standard Time
From:	camelot@amigo.net (Scott Tate)

As we edge ever closer to the hopeful reality of a Buckaroo Banzai TV
pilot (and subsequent ongoing series), many of us have been engaging in
dream-team casting calls. I'd like to throw in my two cents' worth...

Realistically, I have trouble believing that most of the original
ensemble would be capable of resuming their roles; obstacles are
numerous, from increased celebrity status to other commitments to the
budgetary consideration of SAG pay-scale rates. Extensive recasting is,
I think, inevitable. As sacrilegious as it might seem to some of us
diehard fans to contemplate a new Buckaroo (or whoever), we'll just have
to trust the creators when the time comes, keeping in mind what a
wonderful job those unknowns and near-unknowns did all those years ago.

It occurs to me that perhaps some of the core Cavaliers would best be
served by being left offscreen entirely rather than trying to recast
them. Their absence could be easily explained (extended field
assignments, MIA, etc.) and would leave the door wide open for
occasional cameos. Meanwhile, the series (presuming it obtains ongoing
status) would be free to find its own footing by focusing on fresh
characters.

Meanwhile, I'll admit a couple of my personal biases. I can't imagine
besides Jeff Goldblum filling New Jersey's boots, although I can think
of one or two actors who might pleasantly surprise me. On the other
side of the coin, if the time comes for a new Perfect Tommy, I'm
tentatively partial to James Marsters, seen as "Spike" on the WB's Buffy
the Vampire Slayer.

Who IS likely to return? Clancy Brown strikes me as a probable
candidate, having done numerous recurring TV roles over the years, often
for sci-fi and other non-mainstream projects. The presence of the
"real" Rawhide (finally putting to rest his onscreen death in TABB)
would assuage a lot of fans. Likewise, Robert Ito seems available for
TV appearances, though to my knowledge he's never worked under a regular
contract before. Carl Lumbly has often committed to various series
(including the lead in Fox's own ill-fated M.A.N.T.I.S.). Musician and
occasional actor Billy Vera doesn't seem to have appeared onscreen much
in the past few years, but irregular appearances by his alter ego Pinky
Carruthers might not be out of the question. (Perhaps Vera would be
interested in scoring some of the music as well...?) The ever-busy
Vincent Schiavelli seems to work almost constantly, and once in a while
he's even coaxed into playing a recurring TV character, so at least a
token cameo or bit part might be possible here.

As a closing thought, I'd like to publicly express a hope I suspect many
of us harbor: Wouldn't it be great if the pilot would finally showcase
an onscreen flashback with Jamie Lee Curtis as Buckaroo's mom? I'm sure
Messrs. Richter & Rauch would be pleased. Ms. Curtis, still willing?
Fox execs, are you listening?

**** Well, being FOX, I think recasting is a certainty, regardless of
the current pay scale of the originals. FOX will want to go 'younger and
hipper' I'd bet. Plus, I'm looking forward to seeing some of the other
folks. Too bad Kelly Hu is probably unavailable, due to her work on
'Nash Bridges' and the recently ruined 'Martial Law.' Think she'd be a
fine Pecos. - ArcLight ****
