I find it ridiculous that people auction some of the Banzai merchandise off
for so much. So I'm going to tell you what you need to find the goods for
reasonable prices. Patience. Don't be tempted to bid on this stuff because
it IS out there.
Viewmaster reels: saw more of these this summer at a local Sci-Fi convention.
Average price is $5-$8 still sealed. Sci-Fi cons are a great place to find
stuff like this, plus you can always haggle with them to get a lower price.
Same goes for the novel. Also try used book stores and comic shows. Comic
shows can usually score you some of the comics too. Also check out your
local comic shops back issue section. You'd be surprised people. They ARE
there and for cheap.
Flea Markets sometimes yield good results too. My advice on the video is
DON'T.
This has to be one of the crappiest video releases ever. The sound quality
is so poor. The laserdisc's sound is better but the video transfer is also
substandard. Anyone that wants a good quality copy of Buckaroo Banzai
should wait until HBO or another movie channel (not Comedy Central)
broadcasts it again. I got a high quality print from DSS to S-VHS that
looks better than anything ever released. Don't forget that Starland still
sells Banzai merchandise (postcard set, poster, patches, T-shirts). And
finally, it never hurts to do a search on the web. That's what search
engines are for. I still see all the above merchandise from time to time
out there, but everyone needs to go outside their houses and hit the
pavement. I get tired of doing the leg work for other people and it's time
you learned how to find stuff on your own.
Good luck in your pursuits. Darin Dunham

I thought I'd spread the word about some upcoming movies featuring
people who had previously worked on The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai.
This is NOT a complete list by any means; I've focused only on some of
the more interesting projects (IMHO). If anyone's interested in more
information, all these projects have listings at the Internet Movie
Database (http://us.imdb.com/), and in some cases I found additional
details at the Upcoming Attractions page of Corona Productions
(http://corona.bc.ca/films/homepage.html) and elsewhere.

BB creator Earl Mac Rauch has written a script entitled Deja Vu, being
developed by French director Mathieu Kassovitz for tentative release
sometime next year. As we all know, Earl Mac Rauch doesn't get involved
in new projects every day. That's the extent of the information I've
been able to find--does anybody know what this might be about?

Christopher Lloyd will be busy over the next several months, with the
IMDb crediting him with more than a half-dozen current in-production
credits. He appears as himself in Man on the Moon, a bio-pic starring
Jim Carrey as late comedian Andy Kaufman. Following in the footsteps of
Ray Walston, Lloyd will take the title role in the TV-to-film version of
My Favorite Martian, due out early next year. He's also been cast as
the White Knight in a TV mini-series interpretation of Alice in
Wonderland, featuring special effects by Jim Henson's Creature Shop.

Jeff Goldblum lends his voice to an animated Biblical musical, The
Prince of Egypt, scheduled by DreamWorks SKG for the upcoming Christmas
season. This project has an incredible amount of celebrity voice
talent, including Mel Brooks, Sandra Bullock, Ralph Fiennes, Danny
Glover, Val Kilmer, Steve Martin, Michelle Pfeiffer, Martin Short, and
Patrick Stewart (whew!). In 1999, Goldblum will reunite with TABB
co-star Ellen Barkin for Popcorn, an edgy satire of Hollywood based on
the novel of the same name by Ben Elton.

Barkin's other upcoming projects include Dairy Queens, a comedy with
Kirstie Alley, and White River Kid with Antonio Banderas, based on The
Little Brothers of St. Mortimer by David Lealand.

Pepe "Reno" Serna will appear in Luminarias, which is currently in
post-production. I have no idea what the plot is, but the intriguing
cast includes Scott Bakula (Quantum Leap), Robert Beltran (Star Trek:
Voyager), and Cheech Marin (Cheech & Chong).

On the technical end of the movie spectrum, visual effects supervisor
Scott Squires currently plies his craft on one of the most anticipated
films of all time, Star Wars Episode I. Matte artist Rocco Gioffre
contributes to the powerful Robin Williams romantic fantasy What Dreams
May Come, in theaters now.

Finally, as others have already reported in these pages, I'd like to
insert a quick plug for Six-String Samurai, which has no direct
connections to TABB, but which has a vaguely Buckaroo-esque flavor to
it. Speaking both as a fan and as an ocassionally aspiring
screenwriter, I found it to be one heck of a ride.

That's it for now. Keep those eyes open, everyone...

Greetings to all BBI's:

This little note is to let all of you know that you never know what you
may come across.

Okay. For my company I attend many science fiction conventions. This
year we decided to go to the San Diego Comic Con. I spent 4 days
freezing in our booth selling, get this, Star Trek Coffee. Well to
un-freeze, me and my husband decided to go browsing the other dealers in
the room. We stoped at a used video dealer and started looking through
his used laser disks. About 10 tiles in I stumbled across a mint
condition copy of, you gessed it BBTTED. I about fell on the floor. My
husband had a good laugh at my expense but I did walk away from that
show with the laser.

It just goes to show you, you really do not know what you will find at
any given place or time. You just have to keep looking.

Jamie

Calling all blue blaze irregulars in the Southern California area...

My friend recently sent me a pirate "Spanish" Buckaroo Banzai video she
purchased somewhere in east LA at a Mexican video store. It came in a
black plastic box with a very poorly copied cover insert with a cut and
pasted looking Spanish title. The tape inside doesn't even have a label,
and is not in Spanish, but it is absolutely the BEST copy of the movie
I've found! It's much better than my old official release copy. Looks
and sounds wonderful. I haven't had time to watch it all the way through
yet, but I'm hoping it's this good all the way through. I've asked her
to forward the name and address of the video store (and send me an extra
copy!). Meanwhile, be on the look out...

Hi there,

ArcLight mentioned something about relating your first experience with the
great Buckaroo Banzai so I won't disappoint. I saw a portion of it several
years ago on a late-night movie program, and several times since in the same
fashion. Only when a friend of mine rented it for a Birthday party in Grade
School did I realize how impressive the film was. Now sixteen years old, it
still remains one of my two favorite films along with Ghostbusters, which was
also released in '84, hmmmm......
(Also, I'd like to ask whether Epiphany Projects' Buckaroo Banzai CD was the
real deal and whether or not they had sold out of the disc. I still have the
mailing address, although I'm just a tad apprehensive about ordering.
Do any of you know where to find the LaserDisc or novel? I know it's asked
alot but these items are so elusive and I'm dying to have them. Just in case
anyone is interested, I have the original video of the film, a copy of the
workprint and a copy of the soundtrack on cassette. I'd be happy to make
copies for the price of a blank tape.
One last thing, although I'm sure I'm not the first or last to point this
out. In "Into The Night" (Starring Jeff Goldblum & Michelle Pfeiffer,
Directed by John Landis in 1985) there is a scene where Jeff is about to do
something brave and selfless after commandeering a very nice ride sports car.
When Michelle utters "Good Luck" or something to that effect, Jeff turns to
her, point his thumb to sky and says "Banzai" (Although it was spelled
"bonsai" by the captions). This occurence itself is not so odd, but when the
Ira Newborn-composed music spouts out a few very Banzai-esque notes after
Jeff's little nudge to W.D. Richter, I was certain of some sort of
conspiracy. Am I just too suspicious of the movie industry? Maybe, but I
still recommend checking it out, even though the movie is only slightly
better than average. As soon as Dan Aykroyd exits the picture, the film
becomes a stale amalgamation of "After Hours" and just about any other Landis
picture.
That's all for me, so see you later.

																	Kevin
