Greetings,

Ah...late again. Result of a good news / bad news kind of thing.

Good news: new computer
Bad news: was hoping to have some projects to announce this time, but dont.
maybe next time.

Tranferring info didnt go quite as smoothly as Id hoped, so if you sent
something you wanted on the List, and its not here, thats why. Think
I got everything, but...

Anyway, kind of a small ish this time out.

Enjoy life,
ArcLight

Just out of curiosity, has anyone else pointed out that maybe the
reason Jamie Lee Curtis appeared in the (edited-out) cameo in the
film is that she was at one point married to J. Michael Riva?
(Please don't be unkind if I'm just stating the obvious.)

WTG Dave for spotting the Banzai quote in the Star Trek Experience. If
you're really sharp-eyed, you can also spot the overthruster in that ride.

The Star Trek folks have a lot of fun with the overthruster.

In one third-season Next Generation episode, Wesley is using it to
disintegrate a rock (a variation of its original function, obviously). It
also appears as a medical instrument (DS9: Far Beyond the Stars), amidst
gadgetry inside a wall (DS9: By Inferono's Light), as part of a Klingon space
station (DS9: Apocalypse Rising), and hanging between Riker and Geordi during
the flight of the Phoenix in Star Trek: First Contact.

And, as has been pointed out elsewhere, on the copyright page of the book
"Star Trek: The Continuing Mission."

Proving...no matter where we go, there it is.

OK, my apologies to the person who is writing the article... but I recall a
while back in these very esteemed pages that one of the great banzai hoard
out there was writing an article for video watchdog about Buckaroo.

For those unfamiliar with video watchdog, its a small (both distribution
and physical size) magazine with tons of very interesting info on the
evolution of a movie and it's various incarnations (directors cut, editors
cut, etc.). I've kept the issues with Blade Runner, Big Trouble in Little
China, etc. since they are fascinating sources of tid bits.

So, my question.... is the article done? Has it come out yet?
Alternatively, how about sharing the fruits of your research in this venue?

See ya'

Here's the latest news on the Buckaroo Banzai Article :

I finished the article earlier this year and e-mailed it to Video Watchdog
in February. I was fortunate enough to interview the director, W.D. "Rick"
Richter, for the article and he is a very cool guy. He is very aware of
the fans of the film and he is actively following the film's rights to see
where they finally end up.

Now, Video Watchdog is published every two months and their September issue
just came out. If I remember correctly, they get a 3-4 month lead time on
an article so they can get photos for the magazine. I have yet to be
contacted about getting photos for the article, which Richter has said he
will help provide with behind-the-scene and never-before-seen photos.

In June I revised the article a little by adding some more quotes from
Richter and at the time I enquired about the status of the article. It is
on the top of their pile to do but they are still trying to figure out
where they want to put it, i.e. with what other articles and in what issue.

Yeah, I know, the wait is killing me too. :-)

As for what is in the article, I do a comparison between the bootleg
workprint and the release version and get some comments on what Richter
would and would not restore in a "special edition" if he was given the
opportunity to do one.

He did make clear, however, that the film that we all know and love is his
director's cut and was based on the decisions that he made at the time. In
order to do a special edition today he would have to review all of the
footage to decide what did and did not need to be put back into the film.
The one piece of film that he said would definitely go back in is the
opening prologue showing the death of Buckaroo's parents.

I hope this information whets your appetite for the article. I hope to hear
from Video Watchdog soon about the photos but we all just have to be
patient. When I have any news it'll be posted here on the WW1 newsletter
and on the Buckaroo Banzai FAQ.

I found the movie for $10 CANANDIAN ( that's about $6 US at the moment)
at Eaton's in Toronto about a year ago. I have seen it since. Any
Canadian BB fans, check it out.

Hello,
I'm looking to find if anyone has a copy of the workprint and would be
able/willing to make a dub of
it. I could send a few bucks your way in exchange OR swap you a copy of
something else (music
bootlegs, copies of movies etc). I could also try digging through my old
copies of Starlog for any BB
related articles to xerox.

**** Hopefully someone on the List can help. Be a heck of a lot better
than paying outrageous prices for a dupe through something like Ebay.

Greetings and salutations!

After Camelot was so kind as to discuss search tips for eBay, I came
across not 1 but 2 MIP (mint in package) sets of the Viewmaster reels,
both being auctioned by the same individual.

Those auctions closed earlier this evening. My condolences to Ms. Hero,
who evidently did not win her auction. I hope she wouldn't take it amiss
if I report that I won the other one.

At present the *going rate* for a set of the Viewmaster reels (presuming
any more turn up) is between $16 and $31, depending on who else has
stumbled across the set you're chasing. That's the price spread on the 4
sets that have sold in the past month. Whether even the lowest price I
found is inordinantly expensive, only time (and fandom) will tell; I just
thought people might be interested that they're popping up now.

As for those on the list who have recently been asking about the TABB
video and/or book, several people have e-mailed the Strike Team asking
the same questions. At present, my best answer is to point people at eBay
and at the FAQ. EBay final prices on the tape have been running between
about $20 and $40, depending on the condition and competition on a
particular auction; the book has gone as low as $10-ish and as high as
the tape. Laserdiscs (for those of you able to use them) also pop up from
time to time, usually designated only by the abbreviation LD.

Common eBay abbreviations include: MIP (see above) OOP (out of print) and
LD (laser disc); memory fails at present for the others. Think for a
couple minutes and they tend to be perhaps a little more intuitive than
some of the usual mailing list acronyms (with the possible exception of
OOP...).

And of course, regular surfing there will turn up some interesting
descriptions of items. Recently there was an item described as a *rolled
insert* which turned out to be a non-standard (?) size theater poster --
14x36. It resembles the standard movie poster for the most part, but also
has pictures of several other cast members lower on the page. I'll try to
get that graphic up on the team website if I can get permissions.

One last note, rather unrelated... Strike Team Renegade will have a
presence at a local SF con this upcoming weekend (Oct.2-4). Anyone going
to Archon is invited to introduce themselves to any of us; most of us
will be wearing our i.d., or you can talk to the con VideoMistress, as
she's also one of us. If you can't be there, we hope you have a good
weekend whereever you are.
