Greetings,

Hey, hey...two weekends in a row! Wanna go for three?

Anyway...Rafterman's site has bit the digital schnitzel again. Don't
have a clue where it's at right now, but as soon as he let's me know
the new URL, I'll try and get it posted before it changes again. <g>

Reminder: The World Watch Webring is up and running and looking
for new sites. Check out the link on the World Watch OnLine page
and give it a go.

The text version of the FAQ has been updated and should be available
from the World Watch OnLine site "reel sune!" Or you can get it from the
Figment's official home of the FAQ, URL at the top of the page.

Later...

If I'm not mistaken, "no matter where you go, there you are." is an
Australian slang phrase, like "been there, done that."

Way to go, Frog God! --

another small BB reference is out there...

There is a Constable John Smallberries in Shakespeare's London in
_Forever Knight: These Our Revels_, a TV tie-in novel for the Canadian
vampire show "Forever Knight" (currently in re-runs on the Sci-Fi
channel). I put him there; I'm half the author of the book. There's
also another, more obscure, Banzai bow -- "soit sage, mon ami" is in there
somewhere, which is what Reno says to Mrs. Johnson when she leaps up
thinking Penny Priddy is Peggy Banzai. ("Soit sage" is basically French
for "be cool.")

From:	ebony@cyberramp.net (Draco Draconis Ebenium)

Greetings BBIs,

Given the difficulty of finding a copy of the much-sought-after book, I
thought I'd let those folks who happen to attend my alma mater, Texas A&M
University, in on a little secret (Well, I'm letting the rest of you in on
it as well, but that doesn't help you if you ain't in College Station,
Texas, now does it?). The campus library has a copy sequestered away in
its fiction section, free for loan by any student, and free for reading in
the building for anyone else. So, if you feel the need to entertain your
brain with Reno's great account, truck on over to the library, and take a
look. And that's a pretty good idea for anyone looking for the book.
There's nothing that says copies can't be in other libraries out there.

Oi, mates.

Lemme first say howdy to all BBI's near and far, and introduce meself
properly, briefly.

Long about '84 I wandered into a movie house in SE New York, at the
impressionable age of 14, to catch a new flick whose title caught my
eye. You know the one. I was hooked, in a big way. I felt like I'd
fallen into the middle of an ongoing storyline, and it was a rush to
keep up, and figure out what was what. Needless to say, I've since spent
far too much of my time since then burning out the bootleg video of said
movie, made from a pay-station; and now, surfing the web looking for
reference to said flick, and ANY chance of ever seeing the World Crime
League take their big fall.

Then again, I've always been a sucker for what are later termed "cult
movies." Seems to me most cult flicks are just movies a little too deep
for 'mainstream America', at least, most of the time. But that's me.

In any case, I've a question for all and sundry. And no, I haven't yet
perused the archives for this, so if the answer's there, someone just
point me in the right direction, 'kay?

There's a company goes by the moniker of FASA, puts out a paper and dice
wargame called BattleTech (which also used to be considered to have a
cult following, as I recall). In quite a bit of their source material
for said game, Team Banzai, and the Banzai Institute have played a fair
part in making scientific breakthroughs, over the years. For those of
you unfamiliar with at least the PC-game version of this universe, it's
set in the future, several centuries down the road, where all warfare is
played out by guys in giant 'battlemechs', 2 story tall robots dripping
with lasers and missile launchers, and particle cannons, and like that.

Question being, though, anyone else familiar with all this? And does
anyone know if there was ever a copyright problem with FASA, over this,
or what all? I don't seem to recall any references to the team or the
institute in the later released source materials, so it made me wonder.

In any case, ya'll keep the faith,

I am surprised to hear that the video is so hard to come by, is it
off the market now? I managed to obtain one at a downtown
Toronto video sales store (and picked up Big Trouble In Little
China at the same time) a few years ago, but then that was a
few years ago.
If anyone is interested in getting a dub copy of the
studio cut movie (and assuming its off the market and one
couldn't find a legitimate copy for love or money) I would be
happy to make one for the price of a videotape plus postage.
I could even insert the Director's Cut intro with the flashback
of the '50s before the main credits begin, if you'd like.

As for the novel, I used to own a copy and had read it
many times; it helped in understanding of the movie and
made me really want the sequel, just to see this Hanoi Xan
character match wits with our fearless leader. However, I
unfortunately donated my copy to my university's Science
Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Club's library while I was in
university in 1993. I will have to start looking for a replacement
I guess. I gave it away because I assumed I could always
find another copy whenever I wanted to.

I have the comics as well and I may be able to scan them and
post them to a website, for users of this list to view at their
leisure. I'll get back to you on that one.

As for the "No matter where you go...", to my knowledge, it is
an original line of the film, but as people have noted, it has
been heard (along with other notable quotables) in many other
films since. (I shall have to pick up Wing Commander II now
just to hear it for myself).

FYI, FYA (For Your Amusement). I play a tactical miniatures
game based on Babylon 5, called B5Wars. We are able to
design custom ships for use in the game if we wish and I
decided the Earth Force needed a heavy bomber. I named
it the Truncheon Bomber, after the never-assembled
plane Yoyodyne Propulsion Systems was supposed to
be working on. I also named my Minbari clan the Blue
Blaze Irregulars.

Hi all,
I know this might seem like a bit of a dorky question, but I was
wondering if any one knew when Buckaroo Banzai was released?
I want to get some of the other TABB fans together and celebrate the 15
anniversary if not on the date of it's release somewhere around the date
would be cool.
I thought what better reason to have a party then to celebrate Buckaroo
Banzai.

If anyone could help me with this info that would be great.

P.S
I'm having a little poll with my friends who have seen and liked the
movie so I figured that I would ask the question here and see what kind
of a response I got.

Who is your favorite character in The Adventures Of Buckaroo Banzai and
why?

This newsletter is absolutely wonderful. Here I am thinking for the

the only one who adores it. I would love to get my hands on a book -
and here is the deal. I know how to bind books, so if someone sends me
a copy or a photocopy of the book, or scans in the pages, (and since the
book is out of print a lot of those pesky copyright things go out the
window)I will make you a hardbound version with a personaly designed

heya... after many adventures and etc.
this is a new email addy and BBS23 is finally gone again, tho some people
were gracious enough to write and offer to archive it, so maybe it's
floating around out there...
something for WW1...

In most copies of the script i have seen, the dialogue at the beginning
blockhouse sequence is written:
VOICE:
        He's broken the sound barrier!!
ED:
Mach 1.3. Buckaroo, do you read? Commence braking procedure, over.
PERFECT TOMMY:
        Just be cool. She'll hold.

This is reasonable, sounds like it and kinda fits... but i think what
Perfect Tommy is saying is:
                             21. Shih Ho / Biting Through / Union
                                     _____________________

 Nuclear, K'an / Water /The Abyssmal & K'en / Mountain / Keeping Still
"The yielding receives the place of honor and ascends"

This hexagram represents a mouth with an obstruction between the teeth. To
bring the lips together, one must bite energetically through the obstacle.
The storm, with its thunder and lightning, overcomes the disturbing tension
in nature.

Li, clarity, is yielding; Ch'en, excitement, is hard. It is significant
that the man who makes decisions, represented by the 5th line, is gentle by
nature, while he commands respect for his conduct in his position. His
yielding quality is compensated by the rightness of the place and thus is
not weakness.

Li also represents the sun on high and Ch'en the turmoil of the market
below in the Appended Judgements:

When the sun stood at midday, the Divine Husbandman held a market
He caused the people of the earth to come together
and collected the things of the earth
The people exchanged these with one another and returned home
Thus each thing found its place

The inner trigrams are polarized: danger (excitement) on one side and
keeping still on the other, and between them stands the Man of Honor, the
pivot.

Buckaroo is the pool of calm serenity, yielding to the forces of nature yet
perceiving the rightness of the moment when he may use his unyielding will
<fire>, clear mind <water> and the electro-magnetic forces of the
Oscillation Overthruster <thunder> to "bite through" the mountain <earth>

Next time: let's examine Buckaroo's altar - Buddhist or Shinto?

regards,

A bit about myself:

I first heard about BB when my parents won tickets to the preview
screening. Upon their return to the house that night, they insisted I
had to see it and that I would love it. Well, they were right. I have
been a BB fan since the movie first came out. I have an annoying amount
of stuff/memorabilia (headbands, patches, the book, the comic book,
etc.) and I even own two copies of the video (one of which is still
sealed for posterity, haha). I still watch the movie upon occasion. :)

At one time there was an "official" fan club, and I did join it (back
when it was run by the movie company). I still have all my paper copies
of the old WW1's and other stuff that was sent out. At one point two
BBI's called Dragon and Abacus up in Oregon took over the fan club, but
I have not heard anything from them in years. If anyone out there is
interested in some of the really old stuff, I'd be more than happy to
dig it out.

I am so very glad to see that there are BBI's out there still keeping it
alive and I look forward to talking to you all.

Buckaroo Banzai (excuse the short name, pls) is the best film I've ever
seen. Always said that if you can't be painfully clever, call it a day
and say no more.
Brief faq: Jim Mathrusse, BB fan since 1985, discovered BB at a Tower
video store & after one viewing invited 5 buddies over to join the
ring. Sined, seeled, delivered!!!
Started a tradition of "Team Banzai" for various (highly successful)
sporting ventures at Raychem Corp. in Menlo Park, CA. Always in tribute
to the original, never a ripoff.
Thank you for the new script access. I hope that it becomes a film,
sans Hollywood dose of sterility and hype.

                                                     Chapter Two

Azrael raced down the empty city streets. His hands moved themselves as his cherried 57' Chevy flew across the avenues, to where, he did not know. He could feel the sheer power coursing through himself as his foot jammed down on the accelerator compulsively. His eyes still blazed with the fires of damnation, his entire body felt like it was burning up with pure energy, all at his command. Whoever had Evlyn was about to pay.
"So, where're we goin," he asked Wrath.
"The kidnappers can't have gotten very far yet. They're heading for a private airfield to catch a plane back to their homeland where they can kill Evlyn without repercussion," Wrath replied. Azrael hoped no one would pull up next to him as he conversed with whatever it was that now shared his body.
"So what do we do when we get there huh?"
"Just leave it to me, I'll tell you what to do with my power if you haven't figured it out on simple instinct by then."
"In other words I'm flyin blind till we get there hmm."
	"That's about it kid."
Azrael continued, or rather, his body did, towards the highway and on to the airfield. Azrael was almost thankful that he didn't have to drive for he never would have made it there himself being in such a state of rage. Soon, he had reached the airfield and jumped out of the car. He began to walk towards the hangars but wrath stopped his feet from moving.
"Slow down kid," Wrath said, "First you gotta figure out a plan of attack."
"Well if your powers are so great what do I need a plan for huh," Azrael replied.
"Hey, you want your precious Evlyn caught in the crossfire here or what?"
"All right, I get your point so what to I do?"
"See that row of planes over there in the hanger? Will them to start."
"Will them, how the hell do I will them to start?"
"Just force them to go on with your willpower. Do I have to do everything around here." With that Azrael's fingers flew into the air and pointed at the planes. Every propeller on every plane started in unison. The noise alerted two of the kidnapers who then ran out to see what had happened. From the darkness emanated a cold, demonic, almost maddening laughter. Terrified, both of them pulled their .45's and began shooting wildly into the night as the laughter continued. Suddenly, two blazing red eyes appeared from out of the shadows. Both of the conspirators fired every round they had left at the burning lights and finally, they were extinguished. Holstering their weapons, they began to walk back to the rest of their
co-conspirators. From out of nowhere, a crushing blow knocked one of them to the ground. The second received a blow the chest, breaking five ribs and sending one straight into his heart. Azrael picked up the two .45's and three extra clips from each of them. As their attacker dissolved into the darkness, the one still left to tell the story heard him utter a single phrase.
"The weed of crime bears bitter fruit... crime does not pay," and again, the hideous laughter filled the night air.
The dead silence began to take its toll on the rest of the conspirators as they hurried to finish their traitorous work so that they might take off, forever escaping whatever fate befell their fallen comrades. A door within the hangar silently opened and was then slammed shut causing all five of the kidnappers that were left to spin around and look. Before they could investigate, every light in the building exploded in a shower of sparks.
"I don't like this," one of the conspirators cried out.
"You're just bein' jumpy," another replied, "now find some extra light bulbs and we'll finish loading the plane.
"No way I'm leavin' this room fer nothin'," the first said, "you go."
Suddenly, the stone cold gaze of death appeared in the form of two blazing eyes burning into the darkness. A freakish laughter gave voice to the gaze as one by one the conspirators drew their weapons and began to fire at the eyes.
"DID YOU REALLY THINK YOU'D GET AWAY WITH IT," the laughing voice demanded, "DID YOU ACTUALLY THINK I WOULDN'T FIND OUT? I ALWAYS FIND OUT.... THE SHADOW KNOWS HAHA HAHA HAHA HAHA HA !"
Azrael reeled at the words that emanated from his own mouth. He had heard the legends, everyone had, of the scarlet masked man who dispensed justice from the barrel of a gun in the thirties and forties but no one in his generation actually believed in those comic book stories. Who would, anyone who ever claimed to see the Shadow either died or wouldn't talk about it. But this was a query for another time, right now he had to do what he had come for, he had to save Evlyn.

To be continued...
