In case it's not common knowledge yet, you can find Clancy Brown
(Rawhide) as the drill instructor in STARSHIP TROOPERS, and Dan
Hedaya (John Gomez) will be in the upcoming ALIEN RESURRECTION.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go talk to the hornet's nest ...

Don't know if you'll want to post this or not - I'm a dedicated BBI and book
collector, and many months of searching have at last borne fruit - in
duplicate! I now have not one but two copies of the elusive BB novel, one I
paid a bundle for and one I lucked into. I'd be willing to part with one to
defer the cost of the other. Anybody interested, drop me an e-mail...
Otherwise, keep up the good work

I am on your mailing list and also am the editor of ZMMM-Zombie's Movie
Mania Magazine.

It just so happens that when I was compiling my movie news section I
came across the greatest of news that the genius director of TABB is
directing a new strange film.

I now pass this info onto you in a pink box in hopes that the lectroids
from Planet 10 will not intercept it first.
Also, I hope they do not find out that a resurrected Rawhide is fighting
the bug armies of "Starship Troopers" or they will be after him for
sure.

Oh well, as Buckaroo would say "Yes on one and no on two!"

From ZMMM Vol 2. Issue one at www.igcom.net/~zombiegr
---------------------------------------------------------
Hee Haw De Bont!

After sinking the $180 million-losing Speed 2, the
delusional director Jan De Bont is going to try his
hand at a WESTERN with ALIENS. He will join forces
with W. D. Richter (director of "Buckaroo
Banzai") who is scripting "Riders in the Sky," which
is set in the 1860's and "involves beings from another planet."
Will Richter's genius rub off on De Bont? The chances
of that are about as much as us seeing a "Buckaroo Banzai" sequel before
the end of the millenium.

enjoy in good health.
Sincerely

uh... no, sorry, he's not Thomas Pynchon (though he is a fan; the
name Yoyodyne comes from the Pynchon novel "The Crying of Lot 49," in
which there is a Yoyodyne corporation which even has its own Yoyodyne
Fight Song). He's also not any of those other guys, not even Rick
Richter.

Mac Rauch is from somewhere in North Texas (I forget where,
sorry). He wrote a novel in his teens-- whose name I am blanking on, but
it's funny, wildly experimental, and easily plausible as an early work of
Reno Nevada-- which was published in 1969 or 1970, then another *really
good* novel called Arkansas Adios, then became a screenwriter. He wrote
both the script and the novel of a movie in which Robert DeNiro was a jazz
saxophonist (Cotton Club, right?), and his next produced script was TABB.
It was a script first, with the novel generated both from the filmed
script and the zillions of pages of other drafts he wrote along the way
(I've seen an early draft in which BB and the Cavaliers are playing cowboy
music on a TV show while sitting on haybales).
I don't know anything about him in recent years, but in the
Buckaroo days he was living up the coast from Malibu and selling a couple
of scripts a year. Arkansas Adios is so good that I really hope he'll
turn his hand to novels again someday.

Brown will be a returning character/love interest for Dr. Carrie Weaver.
Check it out!!

Also, re: Sepulveda Dam.... thi is a very popular shooting spot in LA LA

From:	oblivion@maas.net (Corey J. Bond)

For any of the "scruffy band of cultists" who missed it...

Entertainment Weekly #406 (November 21, 1997)contained a review for the
video release of Men In Black, comparing it to The Adventures of Buckaroo
Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (yes, they spelled the entire title out).
In "The Alienists," page 138, Ty Burr had this to say about "our" movie:

"When it was released in 1984, W.D. Richer's (Late for Dinner)incomparably
droll comedy was misunderstood on every level: diluted by editors, wrongly
promoted as a straight sci-fi flick, trashed by many critics, and scorned by
the public. Only a scruffy band of cultists have kept the film alive over
the years, but given the higher '90s profile of Buckaroo co-stars Jeff
Goldblum, Ellen Barkin, and John Lithgow (previewing his 3rd Rock from the
Sun demented-alien schtick 12 years ahead of schedule), it may at last be
worthy of a mainstream audience. Or vice versa.

"Kicking off with an expository title crawl that apes Star Wars and is, if
anything, even more incomprehensible, Buckaroo plays like chapter 27 of
Saturday-matinee serial, and too bad for you if you missed the first 26.
All you need to know is that Buckaroo (Peter Weller, exuding Zen coolth) is
a world-famous physicist/neurosurgeon/rock star who leads his Hong Kong
cavaliers to overthrow the Red Lectroids from Planet 10 while at the same
time wooing his ex-wife's long-lost identical twin (Barkin). That's
skipping the Rasta aliens, a mysterious watermelon, and the bit where we
find out Orson Welles' 1938 "The War of the Worlds" broadcast actually
wasn't a hoax.

"Buckaroo would collapse like -- well, like Hudson Hawk -- if the actors,
Earl Mac Rauch's script, and Richter's direction didn't serve it all
straight up. Eventually, the movie bogs down in a protracted chase
sequence, but even as it sputters, Buckaroo maintains the ice blue wryness
of it's hero's koan: 'No matter where you go, there you are.'

"Interestingly, both Banzai and Men In Black pit the good guys against
well-meaning extraterrestrials who plan to nuke Earth unless their own
villains are brought to justice..."

And then it goes back to being a Men In Black review. Burr gave both films
a B+.

If you go looking for it in stores, its got John Cusack and Kevin Spacey on
the cover, which proclaims, "Holiday Movie Preview."

EW is a serious source of movie news, so I'd consider this pretty major
exposure for a movie that has no particular reason to get mentioned these
days (other than being one of the greatest films of all time).

>> Ed. note: I don't get EW, and doubt I'll be out to
snag this one in time. If someone could shoot me the
snail-mail address for them I'd be greatly appreciative.

Hey! Just wanted to drop you a line and let you know
that I put a newer version of my BB site back up at:

http://www.shape-shifter.com/banzai-institute/

Also, my script for BB Against the World Crime League is back up.
I took it down six months ago because it was optioned by a small
production company in Los Angeles while they researched its
plausability/marketability. But the rights issues proved too messy,
and they were in over their heads it seems. Man, I was excited as hell
for awhile there though. It did help me get other writing work in LA,
which is more than I ever dreamed possible.

   Howdy there fellow BBIs,

Has anyone got any info on where I can obtain a copy of the book? The only
one I've ever seen available was in german and the ol' high school deutch
just ain't up to that one. Also I realize this is a long shot but was the
soundtrack ever released on CD? Or if anyone has a line on the store bought
version on the video I'd be much obliged. I know these are tough
assignments, but I know if anyone can do it, it's you guys. Remember no
matter where you go...

thanx,

note to the mail list.

I'm still working on the article (well, the opening paragraphs actually)
and once I send it in to Video Watchdog and get an idea of when it will be
published, I'll drop a note to the BB mail list.

The man who hands Buckaroo his guitar, just before he takes
the stage at Artie's Artery, is Dan Lupovitz.
Dan was W. D. "Rick" Richter's assistant on "Banzai," and
later produced "Late For Dinner" which Rick also directed.

Ron Lacey, who played President Widmark, had a very bad
throat condition during production. The actor (probably
most identified with his role as the villainous Toht in
"Raiders of the Lost Ark"), was still able to appear - but
was unable to speak well enough to be completely understood.
A voiceover was hired to replace all his dialogue.

Tony Miltch, one of the sound editors on the film, had himself
paged in the Hospital, just before the President speaks to
Buckaroo over the video link.
