Greetings,

Still getting the List switched over to eGroups.
They only allow adding 50 addresses a day. Well,
if I wanted to involve actual humans at eGroups I
could probably do it faster.

Later...

Although not something Banzai per se, someone did bring up that that there
was an online version available. I would be very interested in finding out
where.

Thanx

Greeting Fellow BBI's,

Let me toss in my two cents on the matters being discussed here on the World
Watch line.

Re: copyright.
I think the distinction being made between what is legal and what is right is
an important one. There is no question that scanning the novel is illegal
but whether it is wrong is another question. My feeling is that as long as
it is out of print -- i.e., we are not trying to cheat the artist out of his
money, -- and we are not selling it -- once again not trying to take anything
from the artists, -- that it is not wrong to make a copy. I for one would
love to get a copy of the novel, scanned or otherwise, and if I got an
"unauthorized" version, I would be the first in line to buy a legitimate one
if it was later reprinted. Fandom being what it is, I doubt that my position
about purchasing it again is unusual. (This is probably very different from
"the real world" where people are more motivated from monetary concerns than
fandom which is driven by love of the subject and a strong sense of loyalty).

On the auctions
I say keep it up. I don't always want to read all that stuff - when I don't,
I just scroll down -- not that hard. But I appreciate the education I've
gotten on Buckaroo fan items - information that is not easy to obtain
elsewhere. Plus, what I really like is getting the inside information on
what is out there each week without having to check into Ebay all the time.
I am still looking for a Movie poster, so each week I read the at the
auctions column to see if you are talking about one. Saves me a lot of
trouble! So, keep up the good work. But remember, don't be mean. We don't
have to be mean.

Bbi's
If I recall correctly - as a writer Rauch has all his stuff automatically
protected until 50* years after his death. The same would go with screenplays
because it is written material - the copyright annot be renewed (as with
chemicals, TM's etc, though TM's are different.) I can pull out my legal
mumbo jumbo book for you (its all made easy) but thats the laws for works of
art (including: music, written, physical art). now - the little asterisk - 50
years ONLY applies to North America. If Mr. Rauch - and I'm sure he has
seeing as HGV & Vestron now own the video licensing rights - has filed a
copyright folder with each country in europe & asia then he is rightfully
protected there for (can't remeber if its 70 or 80) years preceding his
death. All rights and titles for copyright would fall to his family's estate.

Famous cases in point (non literary):

1) the family of Edvard Munsch (The Scream) is trying to file lawsuit because
as of 3 or 4 years ago the 50 years was up in N. America thus you may see
much more brand names using his painting in their ad campaigns which would
have otherwise been not allowed. In Europe - his family is trying to stop the
N/ American public from continuing to use his images for advertising - etc.

2) Sir Alfred Hitchcock - this is less a copyright issue and more a family
issue - up until the late 80's early 90's there were " 5 lost hitchcocks"
including "Rope" "the Trouble with Harry" "Rear Window" "Vertigo" and "The
Man Who Knew Too Much" Its rights (together with the four other pictures of
the same periods') were bought back by Hitchcock and left as part of his
legacy to his daughter. They've been known for long as the infamous ``5 lost
Hitchcocks'' amongst film buffs, and were re-released in theathers around
1984 after a 30-years absence.

and

3) The INFAMOUS MICKEY MOUSE! This was considered more of a Trademark Issue
than a copyright issue because of the special consideration that went to
Disney Inc after the 50 years copyright law had been up for Walt & Mickey as
of (circa) 1998. The US Government - mainly the dept, in charge of that sort
of thing came to a special agreement in which Disney would be allowed soul
rights to the "Mouse" and as one local cartoon so aptly put it "Don't F***
with the mouse." and a picture of mickey stomping on the guys who tried to
buy up mickey's rights. (ha ha) So basicallythey converted what was a
copyright, to a trademark thus protecting the use of good ole
micky-doodle-dandy until such time that Disney ceases to exist. hmm....

well hope this blabbering was useful

As Mark Twain once said "The reports of my death have been greatly
exaggerated." No, I'm not dead. I've just been down in the basement
of the Banzai Institute for the last couple of months organizing and
cataloging the Institute's library of music. (It would have gone quicker if
Pinky hadn't kept "borrowing" things from the jazz collection.) As a result
I've been WAY behind on updating the World
Watch Files, but that has now been taken care of. All BBI's who have
sent me their locations should now be on the Deployment Maps. If I
have left someone off please accept my most profuse apologies and let
me know. I'll get you on the next update (hopefully sooner than the
last.)

Is anyone else getting tired of waiting for something
to happen in the world of Banzai? I see total crap
DVDs of old crappy 80s films being put out that
shouldn't ever have been made in the first place, yet
we still don't have a LBX DVD version of Buckaroo, let
alone ANY version in print. Pitiful. Same goes for a
legit soundtrack.

With Fox shaking up their personel as well as their
shows, it's unlikely the pilot will get made (at least
I've given up hope). What does everyone think of
Banzai audio dramas starring the original cast of
Buckaroo? Dr. Who has been doing it with great
success.
This can be done relatively cheap. The Fox pilot
script could be adapted as could The World Crime
League original sequel idea. A whole series of them
could be made and then released on CD. I think they
could do well. At the very least, one could be made
for the Sci-Fi channel's online Seeing Ear Theater.

A quick one friends,

Thanks for the suggestions on events at BBcon. Please, any more
suggestions are welcome.

Rokit Files
Week 5 of 6 with obedience training and we signed him up for agility
class. Interesting, just last 4th of July, all the fireworks in the
neighborhood didn't phase Rokit. But the other night a thunder storm
rolls through and he kept us up with his protests! Must have been the
electricity in the air. We are currently working on 'wait' at outside
doorways and some lingering dominance issues. One of three squirt
bottles is always handy.
Our trainer, when asked about an eventual second companion, urged us to
get a female. We've been toying with names, Banzai related but don't
like any of the typical, Penny, Peggy, Mrs. Johnson, Pecos... this will
be a wire-haired fox terrier.

GABBs. We have been holding the twice weekly Gabbs at the Sci Fi website
due to technical difficulty at the usual chat server. Same times though.
Last Wednesday we had a good showing of regulars and two new comers, BBI
Tommy Boy and BBI Calgon. Thanks for dropping by to get aquatinted and
to chat!

Time to get outside and move some bamboo from the Zen Pond landscaping
before it gets too hot today. Catch you all next week!

Always True Blue,
BBI Dragon

Random Novel Quote: Several of the Hong Kong Cavaliers are talking about
the specimen B. Banzai took off the Jet Car after it came through the
mountain and the 8th dimension.

Perfect Tommy : Is it alive or dead? That would seem to be the key
question.
Reno: Obviously it's alive - if it's growing.
Rawhide: Not necessarily. Crystals grow in inorganic chemical reactions.
You can't say they're alive.
Reno: You have a point. On the other hand - what is life?
Perfect Tommy: On the other hand, those were like no crystals I've ever
seen on the slide. Without even being able to identify the compound, I'd
say this conversation is pointless.
Buckaroo Banzai: Right, let's keep our minds on music.
