For me the character of Buckaroo Banzai represents an arch-type of behavior
more than just a guy with a lot of cool skills in the epsionage meets action
adventure meets pulp science fiction mixed science-fantasy genre.

Some of the roots of Buckaroo's behavior are recognizably cultural and can be
examined as recognized cultural phenomenom such as Zen, Chinese Buhdism and
Tao philosophy filted through Japanese culture, American optimism, American
inguinity, American freedom of speech, and American higher education
opportunities. Thus, since the origins of Buckaroo's behavior are of
paramount interest to me, all of these topics appear to be open for
discussion as they effect a person's behavior and outlook on life. Buckaroo
as a role model not as an idol to be worshipped, in my opinion, comes from
being able to say, what about those cultural influences? What can I learn
from them too...

Another element of Buckaroo's behavior is beyond macro-cultural definations
and goes into micro-culture that is the specific people who raised Buckaroo
and became part of his circles of friendship and fellowship (which would
include people he went to school with or the shop keeper at the corner store,
etc.). We see a loved happy child who even when he parents were killed was
still loved and cared for by Professor Hikita -- we may infer that Buckaroo's
positive outlook was reflected back to him by the people outside of his
household that became parts of his circles of frienship and professional
fellowship. The Hong-Kong Cavaliers and the inner cirlce of the Bunkhouse
serve very much like immediate familiy for the only child, Buckaroo, while
the other residents of the institute -- selected fellows -- are like
extended family.

As an adult, Buckaroo chose to share this sort of outlook on life with others
beyond any lyrics of songs we didn't hear or hard playing of Blues, Rock and
Jazz music, but the "brotherhood" and "Love" of fellow man is shared by
extended the Blue Blaze Irregular membership and responsibilities to all
those who would take it... very similar to the phenomenom in the world of
martial arts practitioners seeing other practioners as their brothers,
sisters and cousins in the art.

In my interest in TABB the movie I extend my thoughts to the other
characters, especially the "family of choice" as seen in the film.... thus
while talking about behavior, role models and life may seem on the outside
off-topic; given a chance you may see how this connects to the mood or
underlying philosophy of Buckaroo Banzai and his crew.

Well, after four years, the Nacht Kinder
strike team has officially disbanded. Anyone in the
New Orleans area, particularly at Tulane U. can look
me up after 8/26 when I become the new Blazer in town.

On a lighter note, anyone who got around to
seeing the epic masterpiece that is six string samurai
can check out what Jeff Falcon (Buddy Holly) is doing
now (apparently it involves being the first westerner
to train with the Wu-Shu monks). The article is the in
6/4 archives at AIC news.

In an effort to get the word out to the masses, has anyone ever attempted to
scan the novel and use one of the OCR software packages out there to convert
it to text?

Me, and a sure a lot of you out there would be more than happy to have a
copy of the text itself to read and not the actual book. If this ever comes
to be, maybe the auction price of the book would go down.

Even better, maybe we'd have a better chance of having it not "disappear"
in out local libraries.

Any feedback?

Ditto on the auction comments too. How about some trivia or film error from
the film?
Ok, what's an overthruster really...I mean, when you look at the film and see
it, doesn't it look like something out of Back to the Future? Actually, my
son said it looked like his toy gyro and a bowl?
Ok, Here's another one...who is on a nationally syndicated cooking show today
and was in the BB film? Also, I discovered that this actor, and others who we
see play bit parts as bikers, thugs, villans, etc...are among some of the
most educated and talented people in Hollywood. Some are directors, PhD's,
etc.

I gotta say, I agree with staylor@mindspring.com, when they write, "I really
wish you guys would give it a rest with the auction bit." I have to say that
I am not an ebay aution junkie, and am more interested in the film or any NEW
products that might pop up. Not the ongoing saga of prices and such. I
actually just scroll through any of that collectors review stuff.

I don't think it should be wiped out, but maybe it could be kept to a
minimum. Many times, this newsletter is 80% auction stuff... turning it into
an auction newsletter. Just another thought on that.

Bionic.... got it. I'm with you, man.

Buckaroo is the true renaissance man. He does everything well.
As a fun contrast: Jack Burton of Big Trouble in Little China. Jack thinks
he does everything well, but the reality is somewhat different.

Both are truly enjoyable. I may aspire to Buckaroo but the reality is more
like Burton.

At The Auctions
with BBIs Dragon & Crazy Horse

This week was a modest one for BB memorabilia, mostly the usual same
old, same old with a few highlights.
The week's average for the VHS video tape of this wonderful film was,
nearly $24 with the swing going from as low as $9.99 to a record of
$56.50 for a mint condition Vestron Videos tape that skewed the whole
average high.
The 'Uncut VHS' brought in just under $11 to the bootlegger on it's
second attempt at auction (it didn't sell the first time). I guess there
is something to be said in how a bootleg is merchandised because the
same tape, different seller, who lists it as "Letterbox/Widescreen" had
no trouble getting $35 for their bootleg of the same thing. Go figure!

Now, on to the auctions.

BB Spaceship Prop casting

Dragon: Up for auction, a resin casting of Lizardo's thermopod ship.
Starting bid is at $50. I'd swear a good year ago I thought I saw one of
these, or something like it at auction, not really sure. It just struck
a bell with me when I saw it at ebay. Other then some minor flaws and a
broken piece, it's a very cool BB collectable. Too bad I'm not one of
those fans with so much 'disposable income' or I'd try to get this item
myself. I'll be very curious if and for how much this goes for.

Crazy Horse: This item could pull in some money, even in it's
not-so-great shape. I've heard of these before, but I've never seen one.
I wouldn't mind having it, either, but I got a feeling the bid amount
may go up a lot.

-------

BUCKAROO BANZAI Magic Illusion Dexterity GAME

Crazy Horse: Now this item's description gave me a chuckle. I've
always seen it as a "toy," but now it's an "game." How many can play?
Are the instructions included? LOL, still a cool item, though. Looks
like the seller might make some money, too.

Dragon: I don't quite get the use of the word 'game' either Crazy Horse.
Marketing maybe? A 'toy' yes. A BB game would be really cool, a well put
together one that is. I can just envision the BBIs sitting around a
large table with dice saying something like, "I'm going to throw a rope
around the Lectroid in the red & green pants to try to capture
it...(rolls dice)..."

These little toys have been fetching between $15 and $20 at auctions in
the past months.

-------

Fanzine with some BB content

Dragon: Something new! At first I was afraid I'd find one of our old
fanzines (Out Of The Blue) up for auctions at ebay. But it wasn't. This
is an interesting item because I haven't seen a fanzine at a BB auction
before. It's called 'Banzine! a multi-media fanzine' and Banzai is only
one of several features in it.

Crazy Horse: The Fanzine looks like it has some good art work.
Definitely worth bidding on. I hope whoever wins it will be willing to
put up some of the pics on the web. I'd love to get a look inside!

-------

Patches: specifically the Yoyodyne patch

Crazy Horse: I saw that this Yoyodyne patch was going for $16.95!!!!!
Yes, Dragon, I did contact that bidder. I feel sorry for him.
Letter below:

Greetings!!!
Just to let you know, the yoyodyne patch is available MUCH CHEAPER at
"www.starland.com" It is the same patch, only at a lower price. I do NOT
work for
Starland, I just do not like seeing fellow Banzai fans getting ripped
off by sellers who claim that their item is "hard to find."
I have asked the seller about this, and his replies to me were not very
nice, to say the least. He gave me the old "free enterprise" excuse that

most sellers use when confronted with someone who knows their scam.
Feel free to e-mail me with any questions.

And the reply:

"Thanks much for the info. I am the twisted person who also infected my
brother with a love for the whole
Buckaroo scene. He is also interested in several of the items listed
for auction. I hope you don't mind my
forwarding this info to him."

Dragon: Great work. A suggestion, turn them onto the WWO newsletter and
let them know that we do a weekly column on the auctions there that
might be of interest to those looking to acquire BB memorabilia. Past
issues are also available at Arc's web site.

Crazy Horse: I also sent him the addy of 3 websites, yours, Arc's, and
the "official" one. I'm also gonna send him a copy of the latest WWO
newsletter.

Dragon: Great! We are such 'embarrassments' aren't we... with our At The
Auction thing going stale and harassing people... what business is it of
anyone else's anyway...

-------

Dragon: A last minute addition to the BB auctions, The Lord Whorfin
Watch has returned!!! LOL Same broken band, back to it's original
opening bid of $24.99. I love this in the description: "We have never
seen this watch offered before anywhere.", except for the last three
times this seller had tried to auction this same item off!!! Remember
the week before it was at a starting bid of $9.99?

Also, the long sleeved jersey is 'rerunning' with an opening bid of $35!
Try and try again.

That's it for another week At The Auctions. Keep a cool head when
bidding, set your personal limit and don't get caught up in bidding over
your limit. Remember to do your research first, contact the sellers to
ask questions, email Crazy Horse and I if you wish for advice. Happy
bidding!

Greetings all,

Well after my little 'soapbox' speech from last week about the state of
BB fandom and some inspirational words I hope I look at this newsletter
and find a few more posts than usual. If not, then I will be a little
sad.

No official word about the DVD of TABB or the Fox TV series or another
film project or new novels. Like I said last week, without the fans
stirring the waters, Banzai fandom can get stagnate.

At Team Banzai.net I will be doing a major update this week. More on
that in the next issue. One new page I'm putting up will be tied into a
poll for the BB egroup and they will get to vote on images for the next
BB button project I will do. I'm going to do a set of three this next
time. To subscribe to the BB egroup follow the link below please. Check
out Team Banzai.net late next week for the updates, or the next Dragon
Tales for a good teaser.

Rokit Files
We are into week 6 with our new companion and yesterday was our first
obedience training class. We ran Rokit for 45 minutes in a school yard
to get some energy worked out, the trainer said, "A tired dog is a good
dog" and we took that statement to heart before we attended class. After
some initial conflicts with 'his space' Rokit settled down and did very
well with the exercises. I'll be working with him next week to reinforce
them. One item we bought for training that has made a huge difference is
a device called 'The Gentle Leader'. It gives the dog a double dose of
contact that let's them know who is the 'Alpha' and Rokit has responded
very well.
Now, if we could just keep the neighborhood cats out of our yard because
they leave 'tootsie rolls' for Rokit.

I hope everyone is having a good summer. Plenty of sun screen and a hat.
Play safe and I'll be back next week to say hello.

Always True Blue,
BBI Dragon

Random novel quote: Reno talks about the first time he played music with
BB and the others;
Peggy seated herself in the front row of our little concert and passed
to us biscuits of toasted barley flour and a thermos filled with an odd
pungent liqueur, which after I had imbibed it, made me feel as though I
had devoured a more than ample meal. A strange sense of euphoria swept
over me and seemed to improve my playing quite markedly. When I asked
the name of the hearty concoction, they would say only that it was a
favorite of long-standing with the band but was not necessarily for
everyone. After we had emptied the thermos and I still insisted on
knowing, Peggy smiled and said,
"Very well, Reno. You know Buckaroo is part Mongolian?" I nodded.
"Well, it's a Mongolian drink," she said hesitating. "It's ...fermented
mare's milk."
As you might suspect, on that note the party ended.
