World Watch OnLine: The Buckaroo Banzai Mailing List

Welcome to World Watch OnLine number TWO.
Well, considering I never *really expected this to get off the ground, the fact that this is the second
one is a pretty big deal to me.
I'd planned on waiting until next weekend, but Carl (John Parker) Lumbly is on "Chicago Hope" (complete with accent!) so I figured, what the heck.
One change I'm thinking about is asking folks to give actual subjects to their posts. That way I could do an index of sorts at the beginning. Right now, if I did that it would look like this:

Topics:

1. Re: Buckaroo Banzai Mailing List (17)

Not very informative, huh? Just an idea. Anybody else have any thoughts, let me know.

So what I'm wondering, in an attempt to spice things up a bit, is this:

Who (aside from Buckaroo) is your favorite character?

Just something to ponder for next time.

A note on the format; while any comments I have will usually be sent from my Banzai88@aol.com address, if I add a note to someone's post, I'll precede it with *WW1* to let you know it's me.

Always True Blue!

I suppose I should include a little bit into the WW1 mailing, since
I am a great BB fan. I saw BB: Across....on HBO when I was a little
chap...and ever then, I have been a great fan. I recently borrowed a
friend's VCR and found a reliable copy at Hastings Video, since then, I have
REALLY gotten into it again! I think that BB is the Renaissance Man of the
80's, and should be one of the 90's...the only reason he isn't is that he
doesn't wear a goatee or earring...but he doesn't need one!
Just a little submission about myself, and an addtion to WW1...to
elaborate my allegiance to BB's cause, I have named my race team, Team
Banzai Road Racing. To check it out...http://www.shsu.edu/~stdawb03. I
hate to plug things, but I suppose it is a little sin, not much... and
remember..."No matter where you go, ...there you are!"

Well, I didn't know we were supposed to include a bio, but here goes--my name
is Jeff Warshaw, and I first saw "Buckaroo Banzai" in 1988 in Westwood, CA. I
was attracted to the film from the promos I had seen for the New York City
release(which was earlier than LA, for some reason). I've been a science
fiction fan all my life, and I'm also a freelance sf and fantasy writer,
though I mainly earn my living as a Bankruptcy Law Paralegal. I loved the
film, and force all my friends to watch my video tape copy. Not one person
I've ever shown Buckaroo hasn't loved it! My friend George still wants to
know what that watermelon is doing there. Although I've written some "fan
fiction" for the British SF comedy "Red Dwarf", I've never written any BB
fiction. I also wrote a Star Trek TNG:-Dr. Who crossover story, which I'll
send to anyone who wants a copy, since it's not publishable anyway. Oh,
incidental data, I'm 35, male, single and live in Irvine, with my cat Leo,
who is working on finishing up Einstein's Unified Field theory. Right now,
however, he's meowing for breakfast, so I have to go!
  Remember--"Wherever you go--there you are"--Buckaroo Banzai

P.S. Anyone know where I can get BB t-shirts for a decent price? I saw two at
a recent "X-Files" Convention, but the guy wanted $36.00 a piece!

Hi Chris,
I have tried to access the BB homepage at:
URL:http://bbs.annex.com/relayer/bbanzai.htm
but have no luck going through AOL. Is it just me, or is it some kind of
general glitch for all AOL members?
If there are any other AOL users for the internet, please post helpful info.
Thanks,
James Koo(Jinho@aol.com)

Howdy folks,
About intros, they're not required, but it seemed like a good way to get
folks started posting, and looks like it worked. :) Post about anything you
feel like though, and don't worry, most of the Cavaliers' backgrounds are
shrouded in secrecy, so yours can be too.
But, having said that, here's a bit about how I got sucked into the whole
thing:
I've always been a fan of S-F and fantasy, the less serious the better.
When articles about 'TABB' started appearing, I thought it looked pretty
cool. I liked the whole idea, due in part to the Doc Savage similarities I
saw. Plus I was already a fan to some extent of Peter Weller ("Of Unknown
Origin"-a cool film), Chris Lloyd ("Taxi" of course), and Jeff Goldblum
(anyone remember "TenSpeed and Brown Shoe"?).
But I was a military brat, and in June or so of '84, we moved to Germany.
There went my chance to see the movie, I thought. A year later, guess what
showed up at the theater at the site my Dad was assigned too? Thankfully I
liked it, after wanting to see it for a solid year!!
A word about where we were; as far as American military goes, it was *very*
small. The theater held 60 seats, and the movies were shown off a 16mm
projector, just like some of you probably had in high school. Admission was
free. By then, I was pretty well involved with the place, 'cos there wasn't
much else for us kids to do there, and showed films when the regular
projectionists had dates or whatever. It was $5 bucks a showing and free
sodas at the club, so why not?
'TABB' was scheduled for two shows, and on Friday and Saturday there was a
double feature which consisted of whatever was scheduled and whatever we had
that we wanted to see. I conviced the regular projectionist to let me take
the Fri and Sat shows just so I could show 'TABB' twice more. Those were the
days... ;)
Somehow I found out about the World Watch One newsletter being put out by
20th Century Fox and got in on that.
Back in the States, 'TABB' was the first movie I got on tape, and later, on
laserdisc. In fact, the availability of it on laser was a big deciding factor
in me getting a player. While still in Germany, a friend in the States dug up
a copy of the book and sent it to me.
There's a fair amount of BB stuff I don't have, but I've got most of the
shirts, the ViewMaster reels, comics, some lobby cards, movie posters, etc...

One of the highpoints of Banzai-dom for me was when a local revival theater
here showed it. The first time I ever saw The Movie on a real movie screen.
And the place had a good sized crowd for it. The feel of sitting and watching
it with a hundred or so kindred souls, yelling "Reel Sune!!" back to the
screen and such...that was fun.
Yikes! Didn't mean to ramble so.
Back to your regularly scheduled List...
Chris

In reply to the mail from <WWatchOne@aol.com>...

Hello to all,

As a fan of Buckaroo Banzai (which my wife just doesn't understand),
I am glad that this mail list exists and hope it gets significant traffic.

As my first message, I come to you with a question/request:

Shortly after the release of the movie, I saw in "Books in Print"
that there was a novel of Buckaroo Banzai. I have long since forgotten
the author and never saw a copy of the book. Question: Does/did it exist?
Request/question 2: If so, does anyone know how I could get a copy?

Looking forward to an answer(s).

Here's my contribution:

Hymn (to the tune of the Cornell Alma Mater)

High above the L.A. freeways,
And the traffic's whine,
Stands the well-known Galactronics
Branch of Yoyodyne.
To the end, we swear undying
loyalty to you,
Pink pavillions bravely shining,
Palm trees tall and true.

Glee (to the tune of "Aura Lee")

Bendix guides the missiles in,
Avco builds them nice.
Douglas, North American,
Grumman get their slice.
Martin launches off a pad,
Lockheed from a sub.
We can't get the R&D
On a Piper Cub.

Convair boosts the satellite
into orbits round;
Boeing builds the Minuteman,
We stay on the ground.
Yoyodyne, Yoyodyne,
Contracts flee thee yet.
DOD has shafted thee,
Out of spite, I'll bet.

Buckaroo ... boy what I would give for a letterboxed laserdisc.

The $64 question: Is there any way to get the full width release?
Suppose money was no object? Suppose ethics were no object?

WOOO-HOOO! I found the video! I just bought Buckaroo Banzai on video from
the local Discount Video.
I'm glad it is not screwed up. If anyone might be wondering it is the old
Vestron Video release, not the Goodtimes one. This is cool.

I'm an SF fan from way back, and also into serious gonzo (HST rules!); how
could I pass up on BB? Favorite character is NJ: really *does* know what
he's doing, just can't trust himself enough to realize it. (besides, I
grew up on the north Jersey coast).

Favorite quote, though, is Whorfin's: should be the motto of computer
hackers (old definition) everywhere: "History is made at night! Character
is what you are in the dark!"

hands on my long lost BBI script and other paraphernalia I got 6 years
ago which was lost in one of my many moves.

No problemo.

Hmmmm . . . . .

So, I read somewhere that the creator of our esteemed idol has like
thousands of pages of material on Buckaroo just lying around unpublished and
everything. has anyone ever thought of contacting him and seeing if he'd be
willing to join up in this merry little group, or maybe even give us some of
his stuff for us fans to enjoy?

Just a thought.

Hi, All BB Fans!
Sorry it took me so long to reply to this. Please add me to your mailing
list. As for myself, I was first introduced to BB when I had to go to my
sister's workplace (there was no one else to watch me, I was about 10 at the
time), so she stuck me in the back room with a tv and a vcr. She gave me
some money, sent me to the video store, and I came back with "Forbidden
Planet" and "Buckaroo Banzai". My one regret is that I found it too late to
join the official club, a friend of mine has some patches and a BB headband
that I covet. As for me, I've got a "Team Banzai" patch across the back of
my jacket, and would jump at a chance to join the Blue Blaze Irregulars. I
also keep in mind two things that help me get through this crazy world, one
from Hitchhiker's Guide and the other from BB: "Don't Panic", and "No matter
where you go, there you are." One funny bit-I have a BB & the Hong Kong
Cavaliers "concert" t-shirt, wore it to school one day, and some girl, came
up to me and asked about it. I jokingly said that I had picked it up at
their last concert. and she, not wanting to be "uncool" or something, went
"Yeah, they're music's really great! I have their album." Now there's
something I wish I could get my hands on....a Hong Kong Cavaliers album. Or
an occilation overthruster.....
