"You wanna play games, eh?!?"

Well, the move is complete. I'm still living out of boxes but I got
the computer set up. That's the important thing, right?

Meanwhile, with all this spare time I've got, I found something
possibly of interest. Point your web browser to:

http://www2.rz.hu-berlin.de/inside/angl/people/pdd/advent.html

There you'll find a page devoted to Interactive Fiction (the old text
adventure games to you young'uns) and, more importantly, the
Buckaroo Banzai game from 1985. You'll need to download both
"scott.zip" (for PCs) to run the games, and "adams.zip" which contains
the game files for about a dozen games, including good ol' Buckaroo.
See the page for more details. (and, yes, they seem to have conversion
files for Macs and other platforms, too)

I've also linked to it from the World Watch OnLine page.

Always True Blue!
Chris

Dear Chris-san,

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your fabulous World Watch OnLine!

My brother "discovered" Buckaroo Banzai, the movie, in 1984 along with
his cohorts who at that time were publishing a rather intellectual
monthly magazine called "Wind From the Willows." Of course, the great
doctor and the Hong Kong Cavaliers immediately riveted their attention,
as they were laboring under some delusions of worldly grandeur during
this, their early twenties.

Fortunately for the rest of us, my brother recommended Buckaroo Banzai
to the rest of his rather eclectically erudite family. We immediately
became Blue Blaze Irregulars in our dreams and then followed the acting
careers of each of the actors in the movie.

Here's the best part: as each of us (except our parents, of course, who
were already married to each other) got engaged and then married, the
in-law was introduced, selectively at first, to Buckaroo Banzai, the
movie. It became a rite of passage into the family. If the intended
bride or groom actually liked the movie, then they were approved by
all. We, um, have turned it into a second generation thing, now... all
of our kids are growing up watching the video.

But only I have the book!

Best of luck job/apartment hunting.

Domo arigato,

Julian

Hey guys,

I'm a senior in high school in Florida so to spruce up my dull existence I
enjoy bugging the hell out of my friends with Banzai quotes and references to
break down their will and submit to a screening of TABB. My sister first
introduced me to this movie about five or six years ago and I thought it was
cool but very, very strange and at that age strange was not a thing to be
desired. Well, to get on with it, i saw the movie recently and a light dawned
on me! Buckaroo speaks truth and wisdom and the HKC are awesome, especially
Perfect Tommy (hey, I'm 18. I still go in for the cute thing) but Rawhide has
his good merits as well. I'm warming up to New Jersey but it might take me
awhile. Anyway I love the movie, want more trivia, and desperately want to find
merchandise, so if you can help in any way....

Lithium is no longer available on credit.

here's the story, researched by myself, and available in "The Garage" at
BBS#23, along with some nifty photos...

Sam Phillips, born January 5, 1923 in Florence, Alabama, is best known as
producer and owner of Sun Studios and discovering Elvis Presley, but prior
to Elvis and the "birth of rock 'n' roll", Phillips and his Sun Studios
played a very important and influential role in Memphis blues; at Sun he
recorded future greats like BB King, Howlin' Wolf, Roscoe Gordon and others.
Phillips was to Memphis blues what Leonard and Phil Chess were to Chicago
blues.

In 1951, Phillips did not have Sun set up yet, but he had a deal with Chess
Records; Phillips recorded "Rocket 88", written by Jackie Brenston, and
leased it to Chess. Often called the first rock 'n' roll record, "Rocket 88"
went to the top of the R&B charts and forced Chess, RPM and other labels to
take a serious interest in Memphis music, paving the way for Phillips' Sun
Studios and the rise of rock 'n' roll...

The song being played as the HK Cavaliers take the stage, where Buckaroo
whips out his horn, is none other than "Rocket 88", which Brenston wrote to
showcase his souped-up boogie-woogie piano playing skills (hence "88", the
number of keys on a piano)

the "HB" comes from "Hikita/Banzai", sharing the credit for the breakthrough
Overthruster test between the two scientists.

I can't say I've heard the song called Rocket 88 before, but shame
on me, I like the song. I don't think HB is from Buckaroo's dad, as his
initials were MB (Masado Banzai). BBS#23 has more information than I do on
the origins of the song, as well as what HB88 means. I can only imagine
that HB88 refers to Heavy barrel or heavy bore or something to that extent
in reference to a particular accessory package available for the
oldsmobile 88. Perhaps the song was called Rocket 88 as the author was
driving in one when he came up with the song. Wish I were more well read
on the subject, I'm sure someone will correct my errors. Ja Mata,

Well.. y'know, I got hooked onto Buckaroo Banzai when I was really
really young. I was born in '76, so when the movie originally came out
I wasn't that aware. Anyways, I remember when it finally came out on
video (or maybe TV) and my older brother was watching it, so I joined
in. I really had no idea what was going on.. I thought it was kinda
funny, but I didn't understand.. however, it remained to be somewhat
mysterious as it lingered in my head for many years. Finally, I came to
the realization a couple years ago. I watched the movie once.. then
another time. I understood. I connected. It became my favorite movie
of all time and I was actually lucky to get a copy of the videocassette
with original cover and all from my good friend. Anyways, I just
couldn't believe it. At the time I was just starting to play in a
punk/hardcore band.. so I wrote a song called "Buckaroo Banzai" by
watching the movie and taking notes.. hah hah! Very strange indeed..
anyways, we collectively wrote the song and an instrumental "Yoyodyne"
which pre-cedes it on a self-released tape only album we put out in 1994
under the band name Frodus. We have sold 1000 of the cassettes with
minimal distribution.. mostly from playing lots of shows around the
country. Anyways.. it got to the point I heard that they had Buckaroo
Banzai merch at a star trek convention.. so I went to one with my
friends. I like star trek.. but NOT that much. I mean, Spock is fun..
but I don't really care. Anyways, I spent the money to get in and
experience a strange subculture. I enjoyed it. But mostly in part
because I found all kindsa neat Buckaroo stuff. Well.. as time has gone
on I still love the movie and proudly wear Buckaroo patches on my
jackets. People at shows my band play know of Buckaroo.. some just look
at me funny. To top it all off.. it all came full-circle when we
started playing more in New Jersey. Why, you might ask? Well, two
unrelated people in New Jersey who experienced Frodus and saw my jacket
sent me Buckaroo Banzai patches as gifts. One of the guys said he was
at a sci-fi convention and he tried to steal a battlestar galactica
patch, but accidentally took a buckaroo patch! He said he hated the
movie.. so when he saw me come into the venue we played he offered to
send it to me. The other guy sets up shows in New Jersey and also saw
my jacket.. he just called me one day and said he found a patch at a
weird comic store and got it for me. It was great! Anyways.. Buckaroo
has been evident throughout a good part of my life.. and I think it's
great. But for the Buckaroo in me to go full-circle I wish to get our
songs we recorded known and documented in the Buckaroo Banzai
community. Well.. sorry this is so long, I just went a little nuts!
hahaha.. okay.. bye!

Any chance you could find out the artist name? I'd love to get ahold
of this!

Most likely vice versa -- I've never heard of Earl Mac Rauch being
inspired by a song when creating the whole "88" mythology ... the
novel alludes to "88" used because 8's are considered by the Japanese
to be a symbol of good luck ...

I am trying to get in touch with someone that knows about the production of
the "Banzai Headbands" I am designing new ones based on the movie for a LA
based fan run convention. My usual sources are dry. I need to find where they
were made. A contact name or company to call would be appreciated. Also, if
you don't know could you pass this request on to anyone that possibly might.
One thought that had occurred to me was Terry Ergdman? he was publicist on the
film and he was involved with the Club for a while. I used to know terry thru
some cons, but I don't get around like I used to.

Thanks for any help. TB-TEACorp. :->
